Universally Unique Identifiers (UUID v4): Creating Collision-Free Key IDs for Web Databases

What is a UUID v4?

A Universally Unique Identifier (UUID) Version 4 is a 128-bit number represented as a 36-character string containing 32 hexadecimal digits separated by four hyphens (e.g. `f47ac10b-58cc-4372-a567-0e02b2c3d479`).

Generate random UUID strings using our UUID v4 Generator Tool.

Why Use UUIDs over Auto-Increment IDs?

  • Distributed Systems: Multiple microservices can generate unique IDs independently without database coordination.
  • Security: Auto-increment integer IDs (`/user/1`, `/user/2`) expose database record counts to attackers, while UUIDs are unpredictable.
  • Data Merging: Merging records from separate databases will not cause primary key collision errors.

Generating UUID v4 Strings

  1. Open the UUID v4 Generator.
  2. Select the quantity of UUIDs needed (1 to 50).
  3. Click "Generate UUID v4" and copy the unique key strings.
